The Lion of the Castle in snow, Castle Square, Braunschweig

Snow finally! Even though I live in Braunschweig for quite a while I never made it with a camera to the Castle Square (Burgplatz) when it was snowing. This time I took the chance to get there when it started to snow one late afternoon to enjoy the quietness of the snow falling in this great environment and to take some pictures. The Lion of the Castle (Burglöwe) was already covered with snow and made a great object amidst the Castle Square with all the old buildings around. This back light scene emerged through the light of the powerful lamps that are used to illuminate the whole square and especially the Cathedral. When I realized the luck that I was there at the right time with the right weather I even forgot my cold fingers for a moment. To get an impression of the whole Castle Square click here for a panorama or here for a webcam view.

Water 1a

Is it really January?? When I took this picture in mid January of 2007 at the Innerste Reservoir in the Harz, Germany, it was about 10C, but very windy. So the normally so quiet waters were offering some rare action when they reached the bank. There was a rather big piece of wood - maybe a part of a root - that was getting the role of a wave breaker to make the water look as if it was boiling. Even though the sun was setting and the light went bad pretty fast I spent some time there just to see the strong winds blowing over the water and to see the waves coming ashore. Simple things can be so fascinating!

Woman in black with red scarf

An impression of Paris. I saw this woman walking by when I was on my way to the Musée du Louvre. Wow--black and red in a low contrast environment. I had just enough time to set up the camera, to take care of the framing and to look for a background without distractions and could take only one shot. More impressions of Paris can be found here. A nice webcam view of the Eiffel-Tower can be found here.

Leaf in a fence
Fence with a Leaf

I am always searching for new ways to see or to see things in a new way. After a nice afternoon taking pictures in a park in Braunschweig, I was attracted by a scenery that immediately made me think of a great new way to show "Fall". The very high contrast scenery of the leaf in the fence just had to be photographed. Being in the fence and not falling on the ground like the other leafs made the leaf stand out. But of course only the backlight situation makes the picture interesting. It opens interpretations in many directions ("Leaf behind bars", "Absorbed!") and yet shows fall from a new perspective.

Ships

In mid September I took the opportunity to get to Cuxhaven at the North Sea for a great afternoon. We were just sitting on a quay wall, watched the ships going up the river Elbe and enjoyed the last perfect day.

The door, New town hall, Munich

I visited Munich and of course also got to the Marienplatz with the New town hall (Neues Rathaus). After enjoying the scenery with the famous Frauenkirche (Cathedral Church of our Lady), the Mariensäule (St. Mary's Column) and the Neues Rathaus (New town hall) (here's a webcam-link) I went closer to the town hall and saw this wonderful old door. Well, it isn't really old, since the building was built 1867-1909 (which isn't really old by European standards) in Flanders Gothic style. Its facade, over 300 feet in length, features elaborate stone ornamentation and is really worth visiting. More about Munich can be found here. After all the visiting of famous places and buildings I finally ended at a very famous place to get a beer: the Hofbräuhaus.

Sunset, Cluj-Napoca

I was again visiting Cluj-Napoca (Romania). One wonderful sunday evening I was strolling through the vivid streets and when the sun went down I took a break at the Avram-Iancu-place where the beautiful orthodox cathedral is located as well. People were sitting together and chatting, children were playing and couples were passing by arm in arm. A peaceful and memorable moment.

Black and White

Black and white is a fascinating combination that can be found at various places. Here I found the strong contrast on a street when I was taking a walk. The world is really fascinating in details like this.

Red Poppies

I searched for a field of red poppies. After driving around for a while in our over-cultured, clean and weed-free landscape I found a field of red poppies, white daisies and green wheat just left alone to grow. Bingo! Even the light was reasonably good for the way I wanted to photograph the scenery when the sun was hiding behind rather thin clouds. I didn't find any other place around that looked so naturally beautiful.

Mirror

I waited 'til the heavy rain was over before I got out of the car to take a few shots of the park scenery with strong shadows and wet leaves. It didn't work out the way I had hoped for but it was nice to enjoy the smell and sounds of the wet nature all around me. Then I realized this big mirror on the other side of the street bounding to the park area and the nice possibilities. The frame is quite an eye catcher and I could get a fairly simple picture.

Night Glow

We made a bonfire on the beach of the Baltic Sea. We talked quietly and enjoyed the fresh air and the sound of the waves arriving at the beach. There were wooden poles standing right at the waterline. The darker it got, the more the light from the fire let the poles glow in the dark. Now the sun spent the very last light she had for this part of the globe and the stars prepared to do their shift. Finally the fire went out and we went back.

Joy & Peace

This is something I found in Hong Kong when I was wandering around in late hours to get an idea of how this wonderful vivid city is at night. The message caught my eye because of its simplicity and lack of color and I think it's even a good credo for life.

Young deer in Nara

I was walking through the eastern part of Nara Park and enjoyed the thousands of lanterns made of stone and bronze on my way to the Kasuga Shrine. Suddenly I saw a young deer peeking through the lanterns. Wow! He was curious enough to look at the people passing by, but wasn't brave enough to cross the way. Even though it was late afternoon and very cloudy I could take a few decent pictures before he went back to where he came from.

Cherry Blossom Leaves

The first cherry blossoms in Tokyo started to be in full bloom when I arrived. When I left just five days later the magic of the almost-white blossoms around the Imperial Palace and in other public parks and gardens was gone. Soon the next kind of cherry blossoms (darker ones, more pink) will start to bloom. This image was taken in Koishikawa Korakuen Garden in Tokyo before the ever busy park staff had a chance to clean the water of the leaves.

Cherry Blossoms and Guard House

Being for the first time in Tokyo was awesome! The cherry blossoms were in full bloom when I visited the Imperial Palace and the sheer number of trees was breathtaking. Literally tens of thousands of people were particularly enjoying the cherry blossoms in the area around the Imperial Palace and in Ueno Park and were having lunch outside. I can highly recommend a trip to Japan at this time of the year because being there to see the cherry trees blooming makes the visit truely unforgettable.

Horsetail

Another picture I scanned lately and that I found most appealing in this (almost) square format. Horsetail and related specie, are "degenerate" herbaceous plant, whose tree-sized ancestors dominated forests in the Carboniferous period about 300 million years ago--so this is somewhat a living dinosaur plant. I always liked the interesting shapes horsetail offer and found this specific plant in the Harz, Germany, to be most interesting when photographed from above. I like it especially for its unusual look.

Billboard near LAX

This is one of my favorite images. For an ongoing project I re-scanned the slide and worked on the file with the modern tools that we have these days. Taken in 1996 shortly after I arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (for the first time in my life), I knew that this image was a keeper right after I took the shot. On my search for a food place close by the hotel I walked by this billboard with an advertisement for Delta flights to Japan. The face of the Japanese woman immediately caught my eyes. The ad was no photograph but a painting. Wow! And the late afternoon light was perfect for this object. Framing was a bit tricky though, so I had to try a bit to get this specific view. Besides the face I left a part of the Delta Airlines plane to make sure not to loose the context and used the rusty and nowhere straight billboard and the sky as a frame.
