Gulls, Bremen
Lucky me--this is NOT a composite or a fake or an image that I "photoshopped" in order to have the gulls placed in the image like they are shown here. This is a true shot of 6 gulls that were coming by to check out if we would have some bread crumbs for them.

Love in Fall
Thank God it's a myth that people only get married in spring and then especially only in May. In Braunschweig there's a place called Schloss Richmond (Richmond Palace) that can be rented by people who want to have their wedding ceremony in a not so formal environment like the civil registry office (Standesamt). Behind the Schloss there's a nice park where the wedding party can celebrate all kinds of talismanic and traditional wedding rituals. Now in fall people usually do not stay outside for too long after the ceremony but often have wedding photographers take pictures of the couple and the wedding party in the park. Here is a picture of a heart shaped balloon that was obviously contributing to colorful wedding pictures and that ended up -due to the wind?- with a few of it's comrades in the river Oker that's limiting the park. Romance and love in fall...

Window art, Corfu
Another image that I took in the city of Kerkira (Corfu-City). This small window caught my attention when passing by because of the silhouettes of the four people in the lower part of the window. Later I discovered the spider (with red and black legs) in the upper area sitting in the left part of the spider web. As the newspapers have the same color scheme (black, white and red) they seem to keep the elements together. The eye can wander around. Interesting.

Drying Laundry, Corfu
When walking through the city of Kerkira (Corfu-City) one should leave the beaten paths to get an idea of how people live there. During the long Greek mid-day break the side streets are quiet and the laundry can dry in the hot sun while people are taking a nap. After the siesta life on the streets gets back to busy and doesn't end before 11pm--even late in the season.

The painters workshop, Afionas
Passing the workshop of the artist painter in Afionas always invites to have a look into his atelier through the open door. At this time the light was shining through a small window onto the paint bottles on one of the worktables and gave them a nice little glow and a 3D-look.

Queen Mary 2 // Sailing boat, Elbe river, Germany
On August, 7th, 2009 the "RMS Queen Mary 2", the largest ocean liner ever built, visited the city of Hamburg for almost 12 hours. The ship was coming from New York and was about to start a week-long cruise trip to Norway. On the way to and from Hamburg the ship sailed on the river Elbe which seems to be quite an adventure for the big ship and for the other vehicles on the river because of the sheer size of the ocean liner. The small ship on the right is a catamaran ferry "HSC Halunder Jet" which was coming from the island of Helgoland and was going to Hamburg. The HSC Halunder Jet can carry up to 587 passengers, so it is really not a small ship even if it appears like that in the image. I did not want to go to the port area of Hamburg on a Friday afternoon and I had the idea of finding a spot along the river Elbe where I would see the ship coming by when the sun would set and would put the scenery in warm light. I was at "my" spot way too early and I had to wait for almost two hours before the huge ocean liner finally showed up. In the meantime I was attacked by masses of blood-sucking flies and enjoyed the sailing boats coming by. Because of high tide some of them were rather close to the river bank so that I could take a nice shot of a boat with a pretty big sail. When finally the Queen Mary 2 came in sight, the sun disappeared behind a cloud just exactly for the time the big ship needed to pass the area where I was standing. So much for planning an image...Anyway, I was quite impressed by the QM2.

Arrival on sunset, Amrum, Germany
After a rainy day that thankfully ended with a great sunset the boat arrived with the last light in Wittdün on the island of Amrum. While taking the picture the seagulls were watching me from their places on and around the pier.

Cemetery, Gherla, Romania
I was visiting Romania during the time of the Orthodox Easter and when I passed a cemetery this colorful cross jumped into my eyes.

Spring in Maramureş, Sălistea de Sus, Romania
Visiting Maramureş in spring is even nicer than it is in winter. Lots of beautiful and unspoiled places can be visited and the famous wooden churches make every visit a worthwhile trip.

Traffic light, Vienna, Austria
I found that this traffic light was making a nice contrast against the evening sky of Vienna. If you mix the colors red and orange of the lights you'll end up very close to the color of the sky.

Water and ice in early spring
The first day of sping--finally! And it was -2°C. At least the sun was shining on my ride to the Radau Waterfall near Bad Harzburg. I really enjoyed the fresh air and liked the ice patterns on both the waterfall and the surrounding area that was within reach of the spray caused by the falling water (within about 10mins of time the legs of my tripod were covered with a thin layer of ice as well). Here's an image of the area below the waterfall where the water already makes its way into a little creek.

Trees and fog in late winter, near Torfhaus, Harz
It's getting warmer and the snow is melting away causing a bit of fog close to the ground. Winter will be over soon.

Ice on a river bank, Hohnstorf, Germany
There were some cold days and the river Elbe was about to become completely frozen east of Hamburg. A group of four (river) icebreakers based in Lauenburg had to keep the river from freezing where ships got tied to the quay in the local harbor. On the river banks the ice broke into plates that were up to 10cm (about 4in) thick and that piled up in a very interesting pattern due to the constant work of the icebreakers. Quite eye-catching.
